Illinois' newest full-access interchange on I-90 officially opened November 8, 2013.
The new full-access interchange at I-90 and Rt. 47 is the first project to be completed under the Illinois Tollway Authority's 15 year, $12 billion capital programs, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future. The new interchange sets the stage for continued economic development and job growth along the Route 47 corridor and beyond. Improved mobility is anticipated to make the Village of Huntley more attractive to commercial and industrial development.
The $61 million interchange was constructed under a unique partnership among several government entities including the Illinois Tollway Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation, Village of Huntley and McHenry and Kane Counties, all of which provided significant funding to the project.
An important element in Huntley's economic development activities includes diversification of the Village's tax base. "The interchange was decades in the making and involved the tireless efforts of many people from our elected state representatives, Illinois Tollway and the Illinois Department of Transportation directors and staff, Kane and McHenry County Board officials and staff, and Village of Huntley elected officials and staff. I thank them, as well as the businesses of Huntley, for their commitment to this project. This commitment has set the stage for attracting more development, creating jobs and expanding the local tax base for decades to come" stated Charles Sass, Huntley's Village President.
Huntley's new interchange is surrounded by land already zoned and annexed into the Village. Within the interchange area exists over 300 acres of land for commercial and industrial use, with utilities and roadways complete.
The Illinois Route 47 Interchange Project is a new, all-electronic interchange at Illinois Route 47 on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) in Huntley. The project was constructed in partnership with the Village of Huntley, Kane County, McHenry County and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The project completed an existing partial interchange that provided access to and from the east. The work is part of the Tollway's new $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future. The ramps are scheduled to open on November 8, 2013.
The project included construction of six new ramps, reconstruction of Illinois Route 47 over I-90, and traffic signal installation to provide the full-access interchange.
The project featured several new green construction initiatives, including a geothermal water piping system that makes use of the earth's natural heating and cooling abilities to help heat and cool nearby plaza buildings in a more cost-effective and sustainable manner, reflective roofs and trellised vegetation for plaza buildings to further reduce heating and cooling costs, as well as ramp shoulder pavement that will allow water to seep through and reduce storm water runoff.
