When deciding where to live, safety is a top priority. ValuePenguin has analyzed the most recent FBI Crime Report to determine the safety of Illinois communities. Huntley ranks third among the top 10 safest communities with populations between 15,000 to 30,000.
More than 40 tons of recyclables were collected while residents learned about sustaining the environment. Awards are presented to recognize volunteers across the state for their work in improving their communities. Applications are based on a variety of factors, including local need, volunteer participation, use of resources and results achieved. The project categories include services and mentorship, beautification and sustainability, parks and recreation, memorials and monuments and history and historic preservation.

Fire Service accreditation requires an embedded culture of quality throughout the organization. Accreditation necessitates the development and maintenance of several key documents including a Strategic Plan, Self-Assessment Manual (SAM), and a Standards of Cover (SOC) deployment analysis. The Huntley Fire Protection District is one of only 13 accredited fire departments in Illinois, and 144 accredited fire departments in the United States.
Chris Bessey, a fifth-grade teacher at Leggee Elementary School, was named by the Illinois State Board of Education as the Outstanding Early Career Educator for 2015-2016. The award goes annually to one teacher in the first five years of his or her career who has demonstrated excellence and an outstanding level of commitment to the teaching profession.
Marisa Burkhart, Director of Educational Technology for School District 158, was awarded Educator of the Year. Ms. Burkhardt coordinated creation of the district’s online instruction/learning program at Huntley High School and implemented one-to-one learning with tablets for students in some elementary and middle schools. Educators are nominated by colleagues, teachers, students and school administrators for outstanding contributions to the integration of technology and the improvement of teaching and learning in their school or district.
School District 158 was one of only 425 school districts in the US and Canada honored with placement on the 2015 “AP District Honor Roll”. This award is provided to districts which increase access to advance placement (AP) course work while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams. Inclusion on the 6th annual AP District Honor Roll is based on examination of three years of AP data. District 158 offers 23 different AP courses.
Asia Society named School District 158 as one of only two Illinois school districts providing exemplary Chinese language programs. District 158 has not only demonstrated effective Chinese language instruction, but also strong local leadership and support, and demonstrated commitment to international exchange and collaboration. As a Confucius Classroom Award recipient, District 158 acts as a resource center for other schools in the region. Each Confucius Classroom is linked with a partner school in China to enhance opportunities for language learning and to provide students, teachers, and administrators with opportunities to conduct exchanges and joint projects.
Huntley High School’s "The Voice", in its first year on online, was awarded the National Scholastic Press Association’s Pacemaker award. The award, unofficially known as “the Pulitzer Prize of high school journalism,” is the highest award in the country for setting the pace in the high school journalism world.
Huntley High School was one of only four Illinois high schools selected as a recipient of the distinguished Red Quill Award for 2009-2010 by ACT’s Midwest Regional Office.
